Mobile Suit Gundam Mural

This is a mural I created as an advertisement piece for a wip convention project for school. I wanted to experiment a bit with inconsistent line quality giving a traditional Japanese feel without going over the top and throwing some Japanese characters around in the background. Below I'll show you some of the step by step for how I got this to where it is now.
RX-78-2 Prototype 'Gundam'

For the RX-78 I started with the simple line work. (Worth noting, I'm not an artist. I traced these by hand from the wonderfully detailed pictures used in the Real Grade model kit boxes).
After the line work I choose a point of reference for the light before adding in the hard shadows to give the piece more depth.
The next phase is actually two separate parts. Firstly, add in the solid colors on its own layer. After that, you add in shadows (set the individual selections to multiply and adjust the opacity as you see fit).
The final piece I add in steam venting from the RX-78's radiators just to add some additional visual interest to the piece as well as setting the federation logo over top of a black background. With the addition of the black background it really helps make the Gundam feel like it's revealing itself from the shadows.
